Per-Carat Cost and Price on Line Items
When you add or edit a line on an invoice, memo or memo return, lines with the Loose Stone, Parcel or Miscellaneous line type show two extra boxes next to the carat weight:
- Cost / ct
- Price / ct
Every other line type hides them. A pearl hides them too, because pearls aren’t sold by carat weight.
On a memo’s Add Items (Quick Entry) screen, the Add Misc Item form has the same two boxes. A stone you scan there keeps its per-carat amounts when you Transfer the items onto the memo.
How the math works
- Type a per-carat amount and the Unit Cost or Unit Price fills in.
- Type a unit amount and its per-carat amount fills in.
- Change the Ct Wt and the per-carat amount stays the same; the unit amount is recalculated. Clearing the box to retype the weight doesn’t erase the per-carat amount you entered.
Qty never multiplies a line priced by the carat
A stone, a parcel, or a misc line with a carat weight is one amount. Ct Wt is the weight of the whole line, and Qty is only the number of stones:
Unit Price = Line total = Price / ct × Ct Wt
Example: 3 stones weighing 1.50 ct in total at $1,000 / ct is a $1,500 line, whatever the Qty says. A watch or jewelry piece entered as a misc line has no carat weight, so it is priced as Unit Price × Qty as usual.
This is the same on invoices, memos, memo returns and vendor invoices.
Invoices brought over from the old system keep the totals they were billed and paid at. The old system multiplied a misc line by its Qty, so an imported misc line with a carat weight still does.
Picking an item
When you pick a stone, its price and cost come from the stone record as usual and the per-carat amounts are worked out from them. Picking a parcel fills Price / ct with the parcel’s sell price per carat; enter the carats sold and the unit price follows.
Memo returns
When you add a line to a memo return, its price comes from the memo line, so the per-carat amounts are shown with the picked item rather than as boxes. When you edit a return line, Price / ct is editable and works the same way as above.
On a phone
On an invoice or memo opened on a phone, tap + Add in Items to find or scan a stock number, or choose Misc to enter a miscellaneous item (with an optional photo). Tap any line to change it or remove it. The same Ct Wt, Cost / ct and Price / ct boxes appear, with the same math.
Cost on stocked items
On a jewelry, stone or watch line (or any item picked from stock), Unit Cost and Cost / ct are read-only: the cost comes from the inventory item. You can type a cost on miscellaneous lines.
Credits
On a credit line (a trade-in or a returned purchase), the per-carat amounts carry the minus sign like the rest of the line.
Lines created before this
Lines imported from your previous system keep the per-carat amounts they had. A line with no stored per-carat amount shows one worked out from its unit amount and carat weight.
